Before you know and realize, the summer is already gone! Incredible, each year time flies by faster and faster…

The first part of the summer was really bad in Western Europe, we had to wait until August for the first nice summer days, but we’ve got them and how! Sizzling hot, no air to cool our air coolers down! But even these warm days went by  and we are now heading into the direction of autumn, a season to reflect on and to find a new course !

That’s what BBT is going to do.  We’ve encountered some stock and infill problems during September.  Instead  of accepting them, we’re going to fight by all means.  After a serious meeting with all personnel involved with our stock figures, we’ve plenty of ideas that we are going to execute….customers may not by the victim of long delivery times or expensive manufacturing processes… so next year one and another will change! Customer and service stand at the first place!

The world economy is falling out of the frying-pan into the fire. The economy in the Western world is steadily collapsing  into the swamp of incertitude. Today I read an article that even the American Central Bank has no indications why the American economy is doing so badly….. so many academics and no solutions… of course you can’t keep growing.  And our economic system can only pay off when it grows. End of the story ? The future will tell… According to me the crisis is a matter between banks and governments. In Western Europe anyway. The working man, who’s really willing to work doesn’t experience any troubles…but you must have the will to work, 90.000 unemployed people in  Flanders, but our vacancy for a warehouseman doesn’t get filled in!

Let’s continue together in our Volkswagen world, it turns well and everybody is satisfied, at least if we get our infill again up to the mark… growing pains! We are working at it!

Preface

2015 is almost over and it has been an incredible year… I believe that there hasn’t been a more turbulent year ever before…

First, there was a small country that kept us for months on the edge of our seats. Then there appeared on the European borders a flood of refugees (ironically a number less than the inhabitants of Greece) from the Middle East and North Africa, forcing the European Community member states to take  autonomous decisions and measures instead of with the complete European Union. And last but not least an even smaller group extremists has  shaken the world into its foundations with their attacks in Paris. Each time a smaller group that pushed the previous ‘Hot News’ aside from the front pages.

And that’s why we live now at ‘war’ with soldiers and policemen in the streets. It gives us a safe feeling, luckily we’re not yet under siege… It’s rather strange that economically there is not much to notice of this ‘war’. Except for some heated discussions on television and other media about oil, art treasures and other business, we notice only the increased security on the street. It’s weird that normally war comes along with a gigantic increase of prices for petrol and raw materials, whereas now prices are decreasing…even strongly!  Perhaps this is not a normal war ? History learns that it won’t repeat itself this time ?

Meanwhile autumn is over and the winter season has started. Due to the mild temperatures the turn-over of our VW parts is huge. After all it depends what kind of winter we’ll get in Western Europe.  A soft or a severe winter ? A lot of snow ? Or no snow at all ? You can’t predict it.

What we do can predict, that are we at BBT. The challenge of 2016 is coming. The complete BBT team is ready to inforce the door and to work ‘hard’ next year. Automation of our warehouse will be continued, the forwarding will be thoroughly taken on, some great developments on IT matters are on the way and our stock range will be figured out furthermore. There are a lot of items scheduled on the agenda and we consider this preface as our new year’s letter for our customers. A letter plenty of good wishes and the very best intentions, because BBT knows as no one else, that well begun is half done! Our customers deserve it more than ever before.

I wish you personally and  also on behalf of the BBT employees a splendid New Year, plenty of marvelous moments with friends and family and a fantastic 2016…. Lots of prosperity, luck and health! And let’s hope that violence will not escalate in our beautiful world.

Preface

Just back from California spending one week of Volkswagen fun!  Nevertheless I’ve got some mixed feelings about certain meetings. Some gatherings are past of the high point, whereas a couple of new or more recent events are booming. Dynamics is the key word to  meetings where a real ‘ignition’ power has been inserted.  They go at full speed.

Meetings and gatherings are crucial to our (VW) industry. Without them there wouldn’t be many old Volkswagens driving around and  furthermore they are a fine reason to achieve the  deadlines!

You can compare it with our market segment. Good management and dynamics can make the difference between a fine working VW shop or a bad going shop…keep the spirit and be creative,  those are the only advices I can give you!

There are several big VW events scheduled. We’ll have a stand on Le Bug Show at the historical race circuit of Spa Francorchamps. I hope we’ll meet each other on one of these occasions. Chatting among Volkswagens is always a nice thing to do, isn’t it?

Autumn, here we come…. It seems to me that spring and summer pass by more quickly than autumn and winter.  Perhaps it has to do with the workload ? It also seems that seasons are somewhat equaling regarding parts for our old timers, though spring and summertime remain busier than the quieter autumn and winter periods.

But don’t be sad…. A drive during autumn with those amazing colors of falling leaves can be surely as nice than a drive in summer through the fields.  Simply go outside, far away from daily stress and politics. Perhaps workload gives you the opportunity to do so, enjoy it…..

Politics… within some week we’ll know who will become the next president of the United States.  Nevertheless an important item.  World politics and above all the stability contribute to the economy.  Especially our niche market strongly depends on economic prospects.  But if we screen both candidates, I’m not sure which one will score on this issue…. After Obama the country got back some human appeal, but when those 2 bulldogs are coming, then we haven’t seen the end of it.  The decision will be made on 6 November.  Let’s hope the best may win…

Brexit…. A referendum where the inhabitants of the United Kingdom have voted with a narrow majority to leave the European Community.  Or…. let’s say how the country was just teared in 2 pieces.  Top politicians jeopardized their career and those with a big mouth, took to their heels once they learned the result of the referendum. I wonder what has prospered their career if things really went wrong ?... Politicians  ? Pooh!

Brexit will definitely have its consequences.  Even on our niche market. “ Just over the channel”  some colleagues of mine are occupied with old Volkswagens, but it’s a bit early to predict how this story will end.  Let’s just wait how things will go by.  Norway and Switzerland are no members  of the European Community, by they make part of the Schengen Area (for what it stands for at the moment) and above all of the Unitarian market. They pay a contribution, but they have no voting right. It is a step forward, the UK never agreed with the motions of the European Community…

Meanwhile we keep working at BBT. The unpacking department has been submitted to a complete reorganization  and we are planning a new layout for the packing department.  Furthermore three new VCA  devices have been put in use on the order pickers ( it’s a kind of scanner with a large screen).  And they are still more ideas in the box… we do not stand still and consider autumn and winter as a perfect period for updates and adjustments of our infrastructure.  The implementation of our new website is the next “big” step to go.  We keep investing and innovating  to accomplish  better services for the benefit of our customers!
 

It’s obvious that our product range remains a source of concern, even so during the cold months of the year.  Apart from our Newsletters, each Friday on our Blog appears our “Friday product update” with interesting information about our new products.  You do  follow  our “FPU” , don’t you?

30 years …and counting.

Yes indeed! BBT exists for 30 years… it deserves a small applause, that we are still doing it for so many years. Exactly 30 years ago I was waiting for my very first delivery from California. 3 pallets from Johnny’s Speed & Chrome… I had rebuilt the entire garden house… A garden house that a couple of months later, would already become too small.  After two years of garden house, we moved for 4 years to a stable.. that apparently even sooner would become  too small too. And then we built our first building in the industrial zone, that would be used for more than 18 years and where we controlled the flood of spare parts. In April 2017 the BBT circus is located for about 6 years in our ‘new’ location… 4200m²…. and again I hear sometimes voices that there is ‘no place’. The big BBT circus is doing well and we are very proud about it...But in the first place we wish to thank you all, being customer, supplier or just fan. Thank you all that our dream became reality...Many thanks, thanks, thanks!

And then we close the door of 2016... There is no need to look back, 2016 was a good year, even an excellent year, or as our friend of the house Fred would say: it has been a great year in our big Volkswagen paradise.

Welcome to 2017 and happy New Year for everyone! A year plenty of challenges, a year of Trump and the execution of the Brexit. A year that we should stick together to fight against extremism and populism. A year where we will work hard, a year where there is much to happen, that’s for sure!

2017 will again be a fantastic year for BBT.  We’ll strive for a better service to you, to improve the flood of parts and in June we’ll organize again  our Open House and convoy. But 2017 will be above all a year that we’ll develop our cyber targets… there are great things to happen in the BBT cyber zone…IT co-workers, intern as well as extern, are working at full speed.  Our new platforms are coming and that will be our first new medium for 2017. We all,  BBT and you as customer or supplier will definitely have to adjust, but even on short terms the improvements should be tangible for all of us.

A new medium, a new start. After 30 wonderful years, we’re just continuing what we are doing for all these years. Things in which we are good at and that we still do with pleasure. That our anniversary motivation may coincide with the beginning and all our good intentions for a fantastic 2017.  That’s a nice gift for you as well as for us.

With all my heart I wish you a happy New Year, much work and in good health!  We are ready for it, you too?

Preface

The nicest season is coming and we’re ready, we already had  some sunbeams in Western Europe!  The sun makes you happy, certainly after these cold dark winter days…. Enjoy the sun to the full!

After a couple of years we can speak of a small revival on economic matters, even it is just frail, the unemployment figures are decreasing as well as the figures of poverty.  As we say it is still frail and fragile, but is always better something than nothing at all… Let’s hope the tendency will continue.  A strong economy is always a good thing for our niche market.

Our first (cyber) achievement for 2017 has been executed.  A new host has been set up, that’s quit a task and it wasn’t without problems. Our online parcels service got to deal with some nasty problems, but defects got monitored and restored. We apologize for any inconvenience caused.  Nowadays it’s back working very well… next step will be the introduction our new platform in April.  We’re very excited, at this very moment not less than 9 different IT companies are working for us. That’s quit huge for a SME, I should think so.  The cyber world has become a normal part of our daily life and that count’s for BBT as well, though that should go well together... ;-) To be continued…

At the end of June we’ll have our huge open house, bigger than ever. Followed the next day by our famous convoy to the Vintage meeting of Hessisch Oldendorf in Germany.  You’re all welcome, of course.  All information can be found here.

The week after there will be the greatest VW nostalgia meeting that you can imagine with the European Bug In at Chimay (yes, the town of  the  famous trappist beer) and we’ll be present there too.

Spring started a bit chilly, but gradually days got nicer.  Splendid ‘convertible” weather and a lot of sunshine! People are happy when the weather is nice and it’s so much easier to work with happy people…

Our great cyber investments are in the making, but unfortunately we’re coping with some delay. Apparently they are now in the final test stage.  It’s quite exciting.  We hold our breath ;-)

There have been some changes in our staff during the last weeks. Two new faces in the office, we’ll have to get used to this summer, but more details later on this article.

This spring  is as usual very busy, it seems even busier than previous years. So increase of our staff will be necessary. In September our sales team will receive an additional hand and we have in mind to engage extra people for our warehouse, so that pressure of work can be kept within bounds. Delivery times must definitely be examined, because they are escalating. Our apologies to those customers who were forced to wait for their orders, we are doing our utmost!

The crisis in the world’s economy seems to be rather under control. Large companies are again investing, the mills are back turning, interests are at an historical rock-bottom, which results of course  in investments  and boost of the economy.

In social and political matters that’s a horse of a different color.   France  resolutely voted for well considered  changes, though the American president Trump seems not be an easy person. In the United Kingdom Teresa May has made a real political mess, which will not beneficiate the Brexit… when will politicians understand that they must collaborate instead of their individualistic, populistic thinking at short terms. We are doing better with our ancient cars and peculiar niche market!  We work together and plan things on long terms, so that we are getting all forward!

I wish you a beautiful summer and let’s hope that we meet one another at the Bug-in in Chimay or le Bug Show at Spa. This year we choose not to be presented in a stand, but we’ll be present on both large meeting, that’s for sure… time for a beer…together!

Personnel update

After 21 years of loyal service, Alain has decided to face other challenges. He started his career at BBT on October 1 1996 as a warehouseman, where he became quick  assistant salesman. In 2000 Alain became my personal purchase assistant. A job that he took over and would do for 16 years with all his heart and soul. Many foreign business trips, striving to fulfill the companies spirit for 100%, numerous visits to factories and suppliers, we’ve experienced it together and we’ll definitely remain friends for life. We all wish Alain the very best in his ‘new life’. No more computer screens, but wood, saws and hammers instead…

Alain will be replaced by Jerry, a young dynamic guy, who started two months ago his training with fresh courage. He’s ready now to start his purchase adventure with supplies and productions outside Europe. Jerry worked before in the automobile sector and has a thorough technical knowledge. Hector will leave us too for a new challenge in a big international company. He was for 3 years sales assistant and export outside Europe. Frederik will continue his job, and in December he will receive assistance from Geoffrey…

A couple of months ago we said goodbye to Guido, our senior driver. Guido is now enjoying his retirement. He will not be replaced, our tours have been rescheduled and partly set on external transport.

As from 1 July  2016 prices may be adjusted in between, resulting from the fluctuating world market (exchange rate, change of supplier, production etc.). We’ll do our best to maintain prices  stable for 3 months whenever possible, but we prefer to increase our prices instead of  stopping delivery of certain parts.  The new prices will immediately be modified  in our web shop.  This implies that the price of a product in our web shop will always be applied. Of course, we’ll do our upmost to prevent price increases, though sometimes we do not have another choice.

We have now a separate part no. for every different size of grinding, so you can order the exact desired size… there’s a small price break for larger oversize cranks…. The welded counterweight crankshaft is still Bob’s favorite as it’s the only crank he never saw break! They’ve been made forever by his friend José in California and do the job as no other! Counterweight cranks let your engine run smoother, give more horsepower, rev faster and give better mileage, because everything runs way more in balance.

The all new Panchito 044™ is dyno proven, horsepower making, ports cast right in. These port designs are race proven winners with years of use in engines around the globe. Countless hours were spent on our Superflow™ 600 flow bench designing the intake and exhaust ports. Our goals were to achieve the highest port velocity and air flow through a 40mm x 35.5mm size valve. The 40mm intake port has an extremely small port volume of 62cc and flows an incredible 162 CFM and over 300 ft. per second port velocity, right of the shelf! Classic Volkswagens mainly have a steel oil filler cap, Beetles, early buses, bay windows with upright engines and so on… but Volkswagens with Type 4 ,engines, wasserboxers and later Diesels have a plastic oil filler cap. Now we have this oil seal for those plastic caps, and it will fit most plastic oil filler caps of the entire VAG group! A very universal product at a hell of a price!

Pre molded rubber between glass and frame from your split window bus vent wing assembly. We’re very excited about this small rubber. Why? Because we’ve spent so much time in the past over and over again try to make something universal fit, it took literally hours each restoration again and gave moderate results! This rubber brings an end to that! Take out the glass of your vent wing (or quarter light window whatever you call it), paint the frame, make sure connection hinges and supports are all ok, put in this rubber and put the glass back in, simple as that… no more pressing etc. to do…. Can you imagine how much easier it is to change the vent wing lock now??? Our 7413-000 comes ready to fit in correct dimensions, in the right thickness and well thought about each detail of this small but oh so necessary rubber…so no reason anymore to replace by any repair or restoration…

The market has been screaming for years after good vent wings,.Whereas used items in good condition have  raised to stratospheric levels, what an entire bus costed a mere 15 years ago. Vent wings are victims of the rust devil and since many years we’re aware that  the market is ready for a serious replacement part. Therefore BBT stepped up and started producing a complete new assembly and a perfect replacement part, no substitutes with aluminum and such, but the real deal, a vent wing exactly like original, but new…. Brand new and exactly like original, the real deal. Did we know how many separate parts  are involved to produce these vents wings ? It's almost incredible for a part that looks so easy…. But actually it is a very complicated part to make and to assemble. Besides all different components to produce it needs 24! riveting jobs (exactly like original) it needs 110 minutes assembly time in total for each frame, and the outer frame needs no less than 2 different laser operations. All in all very complicated and very intensive to produce. Our manufacturer did a great job and we’re very proud of the results! After four years of development, the final product is awesome! A perfect vent wing as was meant to be, and 100% like original! Our ideas give new dimensions to our humble VW bus world! Let the air flow, let the wind blow, open these new vent wings and enjoy the fresh air in your bus!

The Volkswagen type 3 family (Notchback, Fastback, Squareback and Type 34 Karmann Ghia) use a different type of brake caliper from 1971 on. Up to 1971 the brake caliper used is the same as for the VW beetle and Karmann Ghia BBT ref 1248 but in the model year 1971 they introduced a new type of brake caliper that’s real hard to get. Sometimes we’re able to score a couple of NOS ones, but that’s rather far and between… so we teamed up and made this state of the art quality rebuild kit for those brake calipers… most of the existing brake calipers can be rebuilt with our new kit. Happy to have found  a good solution for you!

With the ever-growing demand for bay window parts, we’ve decided to start up the bus seat covers in our permanent stock program. We already sell them for a while through our shop and use them in many on our own buses. Their fit is very good and the material is strong… We deliver also the seat paddings for them of course. Be careful when ordering, make sure it’s the right model for your seats. Bus seats have not changed all at the same time, but utilities and basic Kombi versions used this seat model a way longer as deluxe buses and campers… These seat covers are designed for ALL early bay windows and for all bay windows; where the driver seat has a big round knob in front of its base pointing to your steering to adjust the backrest, and where the passenger seat is mounted on hooks and is not adjustable. If your passenger seat is mounted on rails, this is not the correct set for your car.

Because we’ve spent so much time in the past over and over again try to make something universal fit, it took literally hours each restoration again and gave moderate results! This rubber brings an end to that! Take out the glass of your vent wing (or quarter light window whatever you call it), paint the frame, make sure connection hinges and supports are all ok, put in this rubber and put the glass back in, simple as that… no more pressing etc. to do…. Can you imagine how much easier it is to change the vent wing lock now??? Last year we had a lot of problems with the door lock catch for the Karmann Ghia, built before end of July 1963. Originally they came in plastic and they had the intention to break real fast, especially as so many door hinges on Ghia’s have little play and don’t align very well with locking mechanism. We decided to team up with a German CNC manufacturer and designed this door lock catch in aluminum to the highest tolerances. Aluminum has the characteristic, that it will not break of course. At the same time we redesigned, that we could easily make one piece fitting for left as well right side, what made us to rename all under the BBT part 0438-750 and we could delete BBT ref 0438-751. BBT ref 0438-750 will fit left as  well as right as one unique part. We finished the part in anodised black for proper looking to match originals. Sold each.

After long research and looking for a correct supplier, we finished these new brake lines in all correctness! These brake lines guide the brake fluid meticulously between your brake fluid reservoir and the master cylinder from your Bay window bus. Very often they suffered from heat and weather elements or just went old and cracky and so are no longer trustworthy and reliable, what they really should be. We give you here the possibility to replace them by a correct replacement part. Our brake lines are made to resist brake fluid. This is NOT your ordinary garden hose!! Looks, feels and smells like original! As always we predict that brake systems are the most important thing to sort out on classic cars. It really matters. If your engine dies that’s one thing, but if your brakes fail, you can get in a lot of trouble! Prevent your brake system from failing. It starts with a good and thorough inspection at least once a year. If you have doubts about certain parts, don’t hesitate but replace them at once. Preface

A couple of days ago there were these horrible bomb attacks in Brussels and now I’m taking the time to write the preface of the spring newsletter. Deeply moved by the incidents so close to us ….In the first place our sympathy goes to the victims and their family, the stranded travelers and everyone who went through this misery … shame on you IS, all this suffering to innocent people!  This has nothing to do with faith nor conviction, it’s a downright crime!

I was listening with incredibility to the political debate which took off. Some scapegoats must be assigned and we will know … anyway… isn’t that exactly what those terroristic idiots aim at after all ? Destabilizing our society ? It would be a good thing to join our forces on political and diplomatic matters. Then we would really show that senseless acts of violence have no use.

The stock market (except for the airline companies) reacted in a tranquil way. That’s good thing… don’t make it undermine our economy!

Let’s all take an example to our wonderful Volkswagen world… plenty of friendship and fellowship… and with the new season coming (collection cars drive just more during the summer than in the winter period). BBT is ready for a great challenge to supply all the necessary parts to our customers.  Our purchase department is making a great job !
